Reading

Strand

  • Ask and answer questions about key ideas and details in a text

  • Identify a main topic or central idea of a text and retell key details; summarize portions of a text

  • Explain how words and phrases suggest feelings and appeal to the senses

  • Describe the overall structure of a story, including beginning and ending

  • Explain differences between literary texts (fiction) and informational texts (non-fiction)

  • Identify examples of how illustrations and details support the point of view or purpose of a text

  • Apply information from illustrations or text features to understand story element

  • Explain how specific points the author makes in a text are supported by relevant reasons

  • Identify genre and make connections between, self, text, and the world

  • Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skill  

  • Distinguish long and short vowel sounds in one-syllable words

  • Decode long and short vowels sounds in two-syllable words

  • Read grade-level text orally with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension

  • Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words

  • Recognize and identify root words and common prefixes

  • Read all common high-frequency sight words

  • Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and meaning

Writing

Strand

  • Write an opinion to support claims, using clear reasons and relevant evidence

  • ​Write informative/explanatory texts that introduce a topic, use facts and other information to develop points, and provide a concluding statement

  • Write narratives which recount real or imagined experiences or a short sequence of events, including details to describe action, thoughts, and feelings

  • Use temporal words to signal event order and a sense of closure

  • Create a poem, story, play, artwork, or other response to a text, author, theme, and personal experience

  • Ask questions and participate in shared research to answer questions and to build knowledge

  • Recall relevant information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question

Speaking

and Listening Strand

  • Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse peers and adults in groups, and during play

  • Follow agreed-upon rules for discussion and participate by actively listening, taking turns, and staying on topic

  • Build on others' talk in conversations by linking their comments to the remarks of others

  • Ask for clarification and further details as needed

  • Recount or describe key ideas of diverse texts

  • Ask and answer questions about the speaker says

  • Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details

  • Include digital media and/or visual display in presentations

  • Expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas clearly

Language Strand

  *The Language Strand identifies Conventions of English skills that develop from Pre-K to grade 2.

 

  • Demonstrate command of conventions of English grammar and usage

    • Print upper and lowercase letters of their name

    • Use frequently occurring nouns and verbs

    • Form and use plural nouns

    • Use singular and plural nouns with matching verb in basic sentences

    • Understand and use question words

    • Produce and expand complex sentences in shared language activities

    • Use verbs to convey past, present, and future

    • Use frequently occurring adjectives appropriately

    • Understand and use simple and compound sentences

  • Demonstrate command of conventions of English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing

    • Capitalize the first letter of their name

    • Capitalize the first word in a sentence

    • Attempt to write symbols or letters to represent words

    • Recognize and name end punctuation

    • Spell simple words phonetically

    • Use commas and apostrophes appropriately

    • Consult reference materials to check and correct spellings

  • Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading or listening

  •  Use strategies to determine or clarify meaning of unknown words and phrases

  • Demonstrate an understanding of word relationships and word meanings
