The NY State P-12 Learning Standards
To achieve our goals, the 3VCSD elementary curriculum is fully aligned with The New York State P-12 Learning Standards.
The NYS P-12 Learning Standards are internationally-benchmarked and evidence-based standards that were created through a collaborative effort of key stakeholders in the field, including teachers, school administrators, and content experts.
The NYS P-12 Learning Standards serve as a consistent set of expectations for what students should learn and be able to do, so that we can ensure that every student across New York State is on track for college and career readiness.
Deeper understanding is emphasized throughout the New York State P-12 Learning Standards. 3VCSD promotes the importance of depth of content over broad coverage (breadth).
Depth means the investigation of fundamental sets of concepts and principles along with meaningful experiences and application to encourage students’ internalization as opposed to the coverage or presentation of large amount of factual information with little opportunity for deeper exploration.
There are 12 instructional shifts that the Learning Standards requires to ensure that curriculum materials and classroom instruction are truly aligned to the standards.
English Language Arts (ELA)
In ELA, the six shifts are characterized by an intense focus on complex, grade-appropriate non-fiction and fiction texts that require the application of academic vocabulary and other key college and career readiness skills.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, the six shifts require that educators focus their instruction on fewer, more central standards, thereby providing room to build core understandings and linkages between mathematical concepts and skills.
